Queensmead Primary Academy

What help is there for families of autistic children?

If your child is below the age of eight, you will be offered the opportunity to attend the Early Bird or Early Bird Plus course, run by the local authority’s Autism Team, once your child has a diagnosis.  This is a course of 10 sessions, usually in the morning, about different aspects of living with an autistic child.  It will offer you lots of practical tips and advice as well as helping you to understand more about autism.  It will give you the opportunity to meet other parents with autistic children and learn from them too.  A teaching assistant from the school will also attend the course with you, so that they too are able to learn about your child’s needs and what strategies might be helpful in school.  The course usually involves two home visits to look at the home environment and identify any small changes might help your child.

If your child is over eight when they are diagnosed, you will be offered the opportunity to attend a shorter course of information meetings about autism.

All these courses are usually held at New Parks House on Pindar Road, New Parks.

Your GP, Health Visitor or the school nurse may also be able to help you with advice about some aspects of your child’s behaviour, such as eating, sleeping or toileting.

Our SENCO and Inclusion Worker at Queensmead are also always happy to discuss any difficulties you are having at home and help you to find the right advice.
